How to prove what blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is!

Introduction

This was originally posted on 10/3/2015, but is now being updated.

Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit is also known as the unforgiveable sin.

There are 5 verses in the gospels [listed below] that deal with blasphemy against the Holy Ghost and they are some of the most misunderstood verses in the bible.

Matthew 12
31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Mark 3
28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.

Luke 12:10
and whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

How do we prove what the unforgiveable sin is, blasphemy against the Holy Ghost?

Everybody’s in a hurry in these hectic days of survival and treachery, so we’re going to cut to the chase and just focus on the verses in Matthew 12.

What specific strategies do you have and what critical thinking skills are you going to use to solve this spiritual equation?

If we don’t even know where to look for the answer, we’ll never find it.

There are only 2 fundamental ways the bible interprets itself: in the verse or in the context.

So let’s get brutally honest here – do these 2 verses in Matthew 12 really explain what blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is?

No.

Therefore, the answer has to be in the context.

Boom! Half our problem has been solved already.

There are only 2 types of contexts: immediate and remote.

The immediate context is the handful of verses before and after the verse (s) in question.

The remote context can be the whole chapter, the book of the bible the verse is in or even the entire OT or NT.

I dare you to read Matthew 12:1-30 and decisively and conclusively prove what the unforgiveable sin is.

You can’t.

Neither can anybody else because the answer is not there.

Therefore, the answer must be in the immediate context AFTER the verses in question.

Our problem has been cut in half again.

Everybody’s been looking in the wrong place and guessing FOR CENTURIES!

Could Satan have anything to do with that?

In verse 31, who is the “you” referring to?

Matthew 12:24
But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

Jesus was talking to a certain group of Pharisees, one of several types of religious leaders in that time and place.

33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

Verse 34 is the answer.

[Greek lexicon of Matthew 12:34]  Here’s how to do your own biblical research so you can verify the truth of God’s word yourself.

Now go to the blue header in the chart, Strong’s column, first line, link #1081.

Definition of generation
Strong’s Concordance #1081
gennéma: offspring
Part of Speech: Noun, Neuter
Phonetic Spelling: (ghen’-nay-mah)
Definition: offspring, child, fruit.

Spiritually speaking, these Pharisees were the children, the offspring of vipers!

Referencing the same blue chart, go to the Strong’s column, link # 2191 – definition of viper.

Strong’s Concordance #2191
echidna: a viper
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Phonetic Spelling: (ekh’-id-nah)
Definition: a serpent, snake, viper.

HELPS Word-studies
2191 éxidna – properly, a poisonous snake; (figuratively) incisive words that deliver deadly venom, with the use of blasphemy. This switches the bitter for the sweet, light for darkness, etc. 2191/exidna (“viper”) then suggests the venomous desire to reverse what is true for what is false.

James 3
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell [gehenna:

HELPS Word-studies
1067 géenna (a transliteration of the Hebrew term, Gêhinnōm, “the valley of Hinnom”) – Gehenna, i.e. hell (also referred to as the “lake of fire” in Revelation)].

7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame [the natural man of body and soul]; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison>>why? because of devil spirit energized words that contradict God’s words.

Not only were the Pharisees children of vipers, but they were the offspring of poisonous vipers

Obviously they were not literal, physical children of poisonous snakes because verse 34 is a figure of speech emphasizing what they have in common: venom; associating the liquid venom of a viper to the spiritual venom of the Pharisees = the doctrines of devils.

I Timothy 4
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

Since they are the children of poisonous vipers, who is their father?

[Cue in the star wars scene where Darth Vader famously said, “I am your father!”]

Genesis 3:1
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

The word “subtil” comes from the Hebrew word arum [Strong’s #6175] and means crafty, shrewd and sensible.

If you look up the word crafty in a dictionary, it means to be skillful in underhanded or evil schemes; to be cunning, deceitful or sly;

The serpent is one of the many different names of the devil, emphasizing a particular set of characteristics such as cunning, craftiness and treachery.

Definition of serpent
noun
1. a snake.
2. a wily, treacherous, or malicious person.
3. the Devil; Satan. Gen. 3:1–5.

Definition # 1 is a figurative description of the evil Pharisees [as Jesus Christ called them]. while definition #2 is a more literal one.

The word “serpent” in Genesis 3:1 comes from the Hebrew word nachash [Strong’s # 5175] and it refers to a viper, the exact term Jesus described them with.

So the spiritual father of the evil Pharisees in Matthew 12 was THE serpent, the devil.

So the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost [God] that the Pharisees committed was they became a son of the devil, making him their father, which resulted in them having an evil heart, which resulted in them speaking evil things against God = blasphemy.

Luke 4
5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

THIS is the true sin of blasphemy against the Holy Ghost: worshiping the devil, but in a sly, indirect way – through the kingdoms of this world, with all their worldly money, power, control and glory.

Definition of blasphemy
Strong’s Concordance #988
blasphémia: slander
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Phonetic Spelling: (blas-fay-me’-ah)
Definition: abusive or scurrilous language, blasphemy.

HELPS Word-studies
Cognate: 988 blasphēmía (from blax, “sluggish/slow,” and 5345 /phḗmē, “reputation, fame”) – blasphemy – literally, slow (sluggish) to call something good (that really is good) – and slow to identify what is truly bad (that really is evil).

Blasphemy (988 /blasphēmía) “switches” right for wrong (wrong for right), i.e. calls what God disapproves, “right” which “exchanges the truth of God for a lie” (Ro 1:25). See 987 (blasphēmeō).

In other words, it consists of lies, which can only originate from the devil.

Isaiah 5:20
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

HAVE YOU COMMITTED THE UNFORGIVEABLE SIN WHICH IS BLASPHEMY AGAINST THE HOLY GHOST?

So now that we know what blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is, how do we know if we have committed it or not?

Good question.

Its very simple.

Just compare the characteristics of those who have committed the unforgiveable sin with yours and see if they match up.

Ready?

Deuteronomy 13:13
Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;

The word belial comes from the Hebrew word beliyyaal [Strong’s #1100] and means worthlessness; without profit; good-for-nothing, which is a perfect description of the devil and his children.

In God’s eyes, they have a negative zero value, if you get the emphasis.

2 Peter 2:12
But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;

So, are you:

  • a leader of a large group of people
  • that deceives and seduces them
  • into committing idolatry [worshipping people, places or things instead of the one true God]

At least 99% of the people reading this get filtered out right here, on the very first verse!

What a relief, right?

No worries mate. The good Lord has your back.

Now the next batch of their characteristics:

Proverbs 6
16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Do you have ALL 7 of these characteristics?

  1. A proud look – are you so full of pathological pride and arrogance that it can never be fixed?
  2. A lying tongue – are you a habitual and expert liar with no remorse whatsoever?
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood – are you guilty of ordering or carrying out multiple first degree murders against innocent people?
  4. An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations – do you invent all kinds of evil and wicked things to do AND actually carry them out?
  5. Feet that be swift in running to mischief – do you habitually and remorselessly commit a lot of illegal, immoral, unethical, evil & destructive things?
  6. A false witness that speaketh lies – do you falsely accuse people of evil, in and outside of the courtroom, even under oath [perjury], regardless if it means the death of the accused or not, and of course, without any remorse and go so far as to justify your evil or lie about it – again?
  7. He that soweth discord among brethren – do you cause racism, wars, riots, or other kinds of divisions amongst groups of people, especially christians, without remorse?

Nobody should have all 10 at this point.

Now for characteristic #11.

I Timothy 6
9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

There’s nothing wrong with being rich. The problem is when you are so full of greed that being rich is the only thing in your life and you are willing to do anything [such as the 7 evil things listed in Proverbs 6] to get more money, power and control.

Money is simply a medium of exchange.

Its nothing but ink on paper, or a combination of metals made into a coin, or nowadays, digital funds created on a computer, so money is not the root of all evil, its the love of money that is the root of all evil.

Matthew 6:24
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon [wealth or riches].

There is a figure of speech in this verse and the way it works is this:
you hold onto the one you love and you despise the one you hate.

If money and power are your master, and greed is who you are, then you probably have the love of money, which is the root of all evil.

If properly managed, money can be a good servant, but with the wrong attitude of heart, its a horrifically bad master.

So if you have all 3 characteristics from Deuteronomy 13 AND all 7 characteristics listed in Proverbs 6 PLUS the love of money in I Timothy 6, then there’s a very good chance you are born of the seed of the serpent [there’s lots of other characteristics as well, such as being: (a hater of the Lord – Psalms 81:15; or cursed children – II Peter 2:14)].

So let’s get a clearer picture of who these Pharisees really are from the remote context of Matthew 12: [this isn’t all the information on them, just a little bit].

  • First, in Matthew 9, they falsely accused Jesus of casting out a smaller devil spirit with a bigger one because they were operating devil spirits themselves, so they were hypocrites.
  • Second, in the second verse of Matthew 12, they falsely accused Jesus again
  • Third, Jesus healed a man on the sabbath day that had a withered hand in their own synagogue. The Pharisees response was to plot a way to murder him, to totally destroy him!

That explains all the false accusations against Jesus.

That explains the plot to murder Jesus just because he healed a man of a withered hand on the sabbath day.

There’s 2 characteristics right out of Proverbs 6: a false witness and were plotting on how to murder Jesus, [just for healing a man on the sabbath day = shedding innocent blood; true murder is caused when somebody is possessed with a devil spirit of murder, and not when a person genuinely kills somebody else in self defense]. They were also leaders that deceived people into idolatry [Deuteronomy 13], now they have 3 characteristics of people born of the seed of the serpent.

But all this is nothing new. There have been spiritual sons of the devil for thousands of years.

Genesis 3:15
And I will put enmity between thee [the devil] and the woman, and between thy seed [the devil’s seed = offspring, people who have sold their souls to the devil] and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

So people born of the seed of serpent have been around ever since Cain, the first person born on earth way back in Genesis 4. Cain murdered his brother, and the Pharisees plotted a way to murder Jesus Christ. Cain’s first recorded words in the bible was a lie, just like the devil.

John 8:44
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Here in John, Jesus is confronting another group of scribes and Pharisees, this time in the temple in Jerusalem. They were born of the seed of the serpent also, but not all of the religious leaders were sons of the devil, only some of them, just like in our world today.

In the book of Acts, many years later, the great apostle Paul confronted and defeated a sorcerer who was born of the seed of the serpent.

Acts 13
8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.
10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

The 2 categories of sin: forgivable and unforgivable

I John 5:16
If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

“There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.” – this is the sin of making the devil your Lord.  It is useless to pray for these people because they are the way they are because the devil’s spiritual seed inside them cannot be changed, healed or removed, any more than a pear tree has the power to change what kind of tree it is.

This is the one and only unforgivable sin because all seed is permanent.  Its not that God does not or cannot forgive him, but forgiveness is totally irrelevant for a person who is born of the seed of the serpent.

The reason being is that even if they did receive forgiveness from God, so what?   The devil’s seed would still remain within them.   They would still do all those bad things in Deuteronomy, Proverbs and I Timothy [the love of money].

So now all this makes sense: if you sell out your soul to the devil to the point of becoming his son, then you will be in eternal damnation and not if you just do a few bad things here and there.

West Wing Midterms: President Josiah OWNED by God!

The West Wing was a political drama TV series [created by Aaron Sorkin] that ran from September 1999 to May 2006 and had 156 episodes over the course of its 7 seasons.

This 4-minute West Wing video clip below is from season 2, episode 3 called the midterms.  Democratic President Josiah Bartlet is played by Martin Sheen.   Dr. Jenna Jacobs is played by Claire Yarlett who represents Dr. Laura Schlesinger.

I’m now using this blistering video clip from the West Wing TV series that taunts God to train christians to be disciples for Christ! When Satan gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Definition of “owned” from the Urban Dictionary

“v. owned, 0wned, pwned, 0wn3d, pwn3d, own3d.
v. tr.
To be made a fool of; To make a fool of; To confound or prove wrong; embarrassing someone: Being embarrassed.

Originated as a term used by hackers to describe gaining possession of a [computer] system, having hacked a box and got root [access] they basically control it as much as if it was theirs, thus it could be considered owned by them”

Definition of taunt

verb (used with object)
1. to reproach in a sarcastic, insulting, or jeering manner; mock.
2. to provoke by taunts; twit.

noun
3. an insulting gibe or sarcasm; scornful reproach or challenge.
4. Obsolete. an object of insulting gibes or scornful reproaches.

British Dictionary definitions for taunt
verb (transitive)
1. to provoke or deride with mockery, contempt, or criticism
2. to tease; tantalize

noun
3. a jeering remark
4. (archaic) the object of mockery

The relevant time concerning the mixed threads or cloths question that Josiah asks Dr. Jacobs is from about 2 minutes:48 seconds to 2 minutes:55 seconds into the video.  If you noticed, Josiah doesn’t actually quote scripture about the different threads, but he comes on very strong and confident, so most people simply assume he’s correct.

After you read the verses, you will see why no scriptures are mentioned because it exposes the lie in the video!

Here are Josiah’s 18 words verbatim: “Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads?”

Here are the only relevant verses in the bible I could find that matched the description in the midterms video.

Deuteronomy 22:11 [KJV]
Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers [many] sorts, as of woollen and linen [flax] together.

Leviticus 19:19 [KJV]
Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender [breed] with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.

The words “garment” and “garments” are used 170 times in the bible.  I have painstakingly checked all 170 usages in many different versions and none of them mention burning, torturing, or killing anybody for any reason at any time at any location for wearing any garment with 2 different kinds of threads.

 BUSTED!

Garment used 170 times in the bible

Furthermore:

  • I checked the word “wool” and its derivatives: used 20 times in the entire bible, but no mention of burning, torture or death
  • I checked the word “linen” and its derivatives: used 90 times in the entire bible, but no mention of burning, torture or death
  • I checked the word “flax” and its derivatives: used 10 times in the entire bible, but no mention of burning, torture or death
  • That’s: 170 times for garment: 90 times for linen; 10 times for flax and 20 times for wool for a total of 290 verses [in the KJV] that do not mention burning, torturing or killing anybody!

Matthew 22:29
Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

What an appropriate verse for Josiah!

Let’s take a deeper look to see what kind of garment we are talking about.

Leviticus 19:19 – Lamsa bible from 5th century Aramaic text
You shall keep my statutes. You shall not let your cattle breed with a diverse kind;
you shall not sow your field with mixed seed; neither shall you wear a mantle
made of mixed materials.

The word “garment” in Leviticus 19:19 in the 5th century Aramaic text is translated mantle!

British Dictionary definitions for mantle
noun
1. (archaic) a loose wrap or cloak
2. such a garment regarded as a symbol of someone’s power or authority: he assumed his father’s mantle

220px-Antropov_Archbishop_Gavriil

[from apostolic bible – Greek O.T. & N.T.]
Word Definition  [ Thayer’s | Strong’s ]
Thayer’s Definition

a garment (of any sort)
garments, i.e. the cloak or mantle and the tunic
the upper garment, the cloak or mantle

A Greek translation of the old testament coded to the Strong’s numbering system also agrees with the Aramaic text’s wording of mantle instead of garment.  All mantles are garments, but not all garments are mantles.  That’s the difference.

Easton’s 1897 Bible Dictionary says that mantles were worn by high priests, prophets, kings, and rich men.  That makes more sense.

Here’s something else very important to consider:

If the garments in the verses in Deuteronomy & Leviticus applied to all the Israelites, then proverbs 31:13 would be a contradiction, which obviously can’t be the case.  So this again supports the fact that the garment mentioned in the old testament law is the mantle, reserved for kings, priests, and prophets, and not an ordinary item of clothing for the common man.

Proverbs 31
10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

The wool and flax that the virtuous woman uses for making general clothing then are for her husband and family.   Only the flax [linen] would be used for making the mantle, which is reserved for the priests.  Now we have biblical harmony once again and no contradictions.

We need to also make an important distinction: in verse 13, just because 2 different materials are mentioned doesn’t mean that they have to be used in the same garment.   The virtuous woman simply has those two materials in her possession to make garments out of, with each garment being made out of only one or the other material, but not both in the same garment.

Ezekiel 44
15 But the priests the Levites, the sons of Zadok, that kept the charge of my sanctuary when the children of Israel went astray from me, they shall come near to me to minister unto me, and they shall stand before me to offer unto me the fat and the blood, saith the Lord God:
16 They shall enter into my sanctuary, and they shall come near to my table, to minister unto me, and they shall keep my charge.
17 And it shall come to pass, that when they enter in at the gates of the inner court, they shall be clothed with linen garments; and no wool shall come upon them, whiles they minister in the gates of the inner court, and within.
18 They shall have linen bonnets upon their heads, and shall have linen breeches upon their loins; they shall not gird themselves with any thing that causeth sweat.

Everybody knows how hot wool clothing can be.  I went on a 3 week trip to Israel many years ago, and in the summer, depending where you are located, it can be in the 80’s and humid, or it can be over 100 degrees and very dry.  In either type of climate, wearing wool clothing would make anybody sweat, which would contradict the commandment in Ezekiel to the priests.

Keep in mind that back in the days of the old testament, they had no relief from the heat and/or humidity by air conditioning or electric fans.

So once again, the translation of mantle that is specifically designed for priests instead of a generic garment makes more sense.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary [for Leviticus 19:19]
Neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee—Although this precept, like the other two with which it is associated, was in all probability designed to root out some superstition, it seems to have had a further meaning. The law, it is to be observed, did not prohibit the Israelites wearing many different kinds of cloths together, but only the two specified; and the observations and researches of modern science have proved that “wool, when combined with linen, increases its power of passing off the electricity from the body. In hot climates, it brings on malignant fevers and exhausts the strength; and when passing off from the body, it meets with the heated air, inflames and excoriates like a blister” [Whitlaw]. (See Eze 44:17, 18).

Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers
“Not only is it forbidden to weave woollen and flaxen threads together into one material to make wearing apparel of it, but according to the administrators of the law during the second Temple, an Israelite must not mend a woollen garment with a flaxen thread, and vice versa”.

This supports the Aramaic and Greek texts that the garment was a mantle, which is reserved for priests.

Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible
Neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee; for, as Josephus (l) says, none but the priests were allowed to wear such a garment, and with which the Misnah (m) agrees;

Definition of mishnah

noun, plural Mishnayoth, Mishnayot, Mishnayos
1. the collection of oral laws compiled about a.d. 200 by Rabbi Judah ha-Nasi and forming the basic part of the Talmud.
2. an article or section of this collection.

So three different bible commentaries, the mishnah, Josephus, the great early church historian, 2 ancient biblical manuscripts, plus several other bible verses are all in agreement that the garment spoken of in Leviticus & Deuteronomy is a mantle for priests.

Leviticus 6:10
And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar.

No mention of wool here because that was forbidden by old testament law.

However, if somebody was infected by leprosy and it contaminated their clothing, then they were commanded to burn the items of clothing [and not the person!] to destroy the leprosy in the cloth and prevent it from spreading, which makes sense, since they didn’t know what caused it or how to cure it.

Leviticus 13 [amplified bible]
50 The priest shall examine the diseased article and shut it up for seven days.
51 He shall examine the disease on the seventh day; if [it] is spread in the garment, or in the article, whatever service it may be used for, the disease is a rotting or corroding leprosy; it is unclean.
52 He shall burn the garment, whether diseased in warp or woof, in wool or linen, or anything made of skin; for it is a rotting or corroding leprosy, to be burned in the fire.

Here is yet another reason for the commandment of not mixing 2 different kinds of threads in the priest’s mantle.

Look at page 112 in Manners and customs of the bible [#203 mixed cloth] by Rev. James m. Freeman.   A complete guide to the origin and significance of our time-honored biblical tradition.

This was in opposition to the Zabian priests, who wore robes of woolen and linen, perhaps hoping thereby to have the benefit of some lucky conjunction of planets, which would bring a blessing on their sheep and their flax.

It is said that the pious Jews would not sew a garment of woolen and flax thread, and if one saw an Israelite wearing a garment of mixed cloth, it was lawful to him to fall upon him and tear the forbidden garment to pieces.”

Once again, the pieces of the puzzle of the mixed threads in the West Wing video fit together perfectly.

Google books verifies this as well.   Zabian priests clothing was made of wool & linen [see end of page]

[An introduction to the Old Testament: critical, historical and theological, containing a discussion of the most important questions belonging to the several books, Volume 1]

So now we know that the West Wing Midterms video lied by implication, it totally fabricated, the idea that the bible says to burn somebody to death because they wore a garment with 2 different kinds of cloth or threads.

So what else is wrong?

The clear implication is that the old testament laws directly apply to us in the first place.

Who are the books of the old testament written directly to?

Leviticus 1
1 And the Lord called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the Lord, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.

Deuteronomy 1:1
These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

I Corinthians 10:32
Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

These are the 3 great classifications of people.  The church of God did not come into existence until the age of grace on the day of Pentecost in 28AD, so the old testament & gospels were written directly to Israel, before the church of God existed.

Romans 3:19
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

The Israelites during the time of Leviticus & Deuteronomy were under the bondage of the old testament Mosaic law [the law of Moses].  We are not because grace and truth came by the life and works of Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3
23 But before faith came [the faith of Jesus Christ], we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster [the law].
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Romans 15:4
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

“Aforetime” refers to the period of time before the day of Pentecost in 28AD, which was the first day of the age of grace, which we are now living in.

Acts 21:20
And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law:

This is why so many times we are brought under the bondage of the old testament laws again, because there are too many religious folks who put the laws of the old testament [that was already fulfilled by Jesus Christ] above the grace of God in which we live today.

Therefore, the old testament and gospels were written for our learning, but not directly to us, so no person since 28AD is required or even obligated to carry out the verses in Deuteronomy & Leviticus!

So this West Wing midterms video is based on several ungodly things:

  1. Lies: Satan often adds words to God’s word in order to corrupt it and teach wrong doctrines that drive people away from God.
  2. Taunts: evil religious leaders often tempted and taunted Jesus & others with contempt for God and his word
  3. Legalism: the devil uses legalism to put people under the bondage of the old testament laws that Jesus Christ already freed us from
  4. Ignorance: President Josiah obviously didn’t do his homework, yet pretended to be the biblical authority!  This leads us to the next one…
  5. Hypocrisy: Jesus Christ called some very wicked religious leaders hypocrites many times throughout the gospels

From the West Wing video, President Josiah Bartlet’s question “Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads?” implies that the bible commands this be done, but he is obviously gravely mistaken.

Was Jesus sent to cause war?

Do you like challenges? How about tackling some bible verses that are not only very difficult for many, if not most, Christians and non Christians to believe, but, just to make matters even worse, they also seem to contradict many other bible verses?

Many people could wrongly conclude that the bible contains hate speech, is crazy, throw the towel in, and walk away with a bitter taste in their mouth against Jesus, the bible, or God, perhaps for the rest of their lives, wondering how all this could be.

As I endeavor to do in all my teachings, their purpose is not only to teach spiritual knowledge, but to empower you to do your own critical, logical thinking and what free online biblical research tools to use in order to make the word of God your own.

How to get rooted and grounded in God’s love and his word is what this is all about.

The verses in question are in the tenth chapter of the gospel of Matthew.

Matthew 10 [KJV]
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

How could Jesus possibly say such a thing?!?!

To make matters even worse, there are even more verses in Luke similar to these!

Luke 12
51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

Whenever we see an apparent contradiction of 2 or more bible verses, or even if there are no actual contradictions, but the verse itself seems to be wrong, or extremely unlikely, or just seems to go against all common sense and logic, what are we to do?

The answer has to be in one or two places: either there is a mistranslation of the biblical manuscripts, or we don’t properly understand the verse. This could be due to inaccurate teachings we’ve had in the past, missing information, or perhaps a preconceived idea or wrong assumption that we’re not immediately aware of.

So let’s start our journey for truth by seeing if there is a mistranslation of the text by going to biblegateway.com and using the parallel verses feature to test 3 other randomly chosen versions.

3 different bible versions of Matthew 10:34-36

Matthew 10 [Darby]
34 Do not think that I have come to send peace upon the earth: I have not come to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I have come to set a man at variance with his father, and the daughter with her mother, and the daughter-in-law with her mother-in-law;
36 and they of his household [shall be] a man’s enemies.

Matthew 10 [amplified bible]
34 Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35 For I have come to part asunder a man from his father, and a daughter from her mother, and a [m]newly married wife from her mother-in-law—
36 And a man’s foes will be they of his own household.

Matthew 10 [Mounce interlinear new testament]
34 Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35 For I came to turn a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her
mother-in-law;
36 and a man’ s enemies will be members of his own household.

So far, the text remains fundamentally the same, but we will check 2 older, more authoritative manuscripts just to be sure.

Here is what the Codex Sinaiticus says [the oldest complete copy of the Greek new testament, dating back to the 4th century]

Codex Sinaiticus
Matthew 10
34 Think not that I came to send peace on the earth, I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I came to set a man in opposition to his father, and a daughter to her mother, and a daughter-in-law to her mother-in-law;
36 and a man’s enemies shall be those of his household.

Codex Sinaiticus: 4th century Greek text of Matthew 6
Codex Sinaiticus: 4th century Greek text of Matthew 6

And finally, we’ll take a look at an archive of the lamsa bible, translated from a 5th century Aramaic text.

Lamsa bible
Matthew 10
34 ¶ Do not expect that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to
bring peace but a sword.
35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her
mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
36 And a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.

Ok, so after checking several different versions & manuscripts, we can see that the chance of a translation error [or even deliberate biblical forgery] is extremely small. Therefore, we must conclude that the problem is in our understanding of these difficult verses and not a mistranslation.

Now we will begin to shine some light on this passage of scripture. In the center margin of my bible, there is a reference note that says these verses were quoted from the old testament – Micah 7:6.

Micah 7
1 Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the vintage: there is no cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.
2 The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.
3 That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his mischievous desire: so they wrap it up.
4 The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen and thy visitation cometh; now shall be their perplexity.
5 Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom.
6 For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.
7 Therefore I will look unto the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.

So in Matthew 10, Jesus was quoting from the old testament. The concept of members of a family being against each other didn’t originate with him. He was merely passing on the same basic information to his generation and beyond. But that still does not fully explain the mystery – yet.

As we can see from the context, when members of a household are at war against each other, the root cause originates from the evil men of their day – [verses 2 to 4 describe them well], and not Jesus.   In verse 3, the word “reward” comes from the Hebrew word “shillum” [Phonetic Spelling: (shil-loom’)] and means “bribe”.

The religious leaders in Micah’s day were corrupt, just as many are today.  Whenever there are bribes, there are other evil things going on and the operation of multiple devil spirits.

Exodus 23:8 [amplified bible]
7 Keep far from a false matter and [be very careful] not to condemn to death the innocent and the righteous, for I will not justify and acquit the wicked.
8 You shall take no bribe, for the bribe blinds those who have sight and perverts the testimony and the cause of the righteous.

Lying and bribery go hand in hand; they are very often associated with each other, as are violent mobs, riots, etc.  Bribery does not cause physical blindness, but spiritual.  That is why so much of politics, man-made systems of religion & big business are “blind” to the evil they cause and why they lie to cover up their corruption that we see so often nowadays in the media and the internet.

Micah 3
9 Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity.
10 They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity.
11 The heads thereof judge for reward [bribe], and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the Lord, and say, Is not the Lord among us? none evil can come upon us.

Proverbs 6 has an even more extensive list of the characteristics of these evil people.

Proverbs 6
12 A man of Belial, a wicked person, is he that goeth about with a perverse mouth;
13 he winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
14 deceits are in his heart; he deviseth mischief at all times, he soweth discords.
15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly: in a moment shall he be broken, and without remedy.
16 These six [things] doth Jehovah hate, yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;
18 a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations; feet that are swift in running to mischief;
19 a false witness that uttereth lies, and he that soweth discords among brethren.

There are only 2 basic types of reasons for war: 5-senses reasons and spiritual ones. In the 5-senses category, the actual number of reasons could be endless: disputes over property, money, natural resources, etc, but the root cause is in the spiritual category.

The men and women who have sold themselves out to Satan, these sons of Belial, are the root cause of wars. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist or brain surgeon to figure out that committing murders, lying, deceiving, sowing discord amongst various groups of people, devising mischief, speaking wicked imaginations, etc could lead to war.

You must remember that these same people who commit those things listed in proverbs 6 are the exact same people mentioned in Deuteronomy 13 – those who have sold out to Satan are leaders with a lot of influence, power, money and abilities in our societies around the globe who lead people into idolatry.

Deuteronomy 13:13
Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;

Psalms 28:3
Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts.

Jeremiah 23 [amplified bible]
11 For both [false] prophet and priest are ungodly and profane; even in My house have I found their wickedness, says the Lord.
12 Therefore their way will be to them like slippery paths in the dark; they will be driven on and fall into them. For I will bring evil upon them in the year of their punishment, says the Lord.
16 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Do not listen to the words of the [false] prophets who prophesy to you. They teach you vanity (emptiness, falsity, and futility) and fill you with vain hopes; they speak a vision of their own minds and not from the mouth of the Lord.
17 They are continually saying to those who despise Me and the word of the Lord, The Lord has said: You shall have peace; and they say to everyone who walks after the stubbornness of his own mind and heart, No evil shall come upon you.

Matthew 24
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers [many] places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax [grow] cold.

Notice that all these bad things happen because of the false prophets, which is just another name for the sons of belial.

I Thessalonians 5
2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

So we have seen that world peace is an impossibility for 3 fundamental reasons:

  1. Scripture: many different bible verses tell us that there will absolutely be wars
  2. Logic: a problem will not go away until the root cause has been identified, located & removed. The evil people causing wars [sons of belial = sons of the devil] will be around until the devil gets thrown into the lake of fire in the book of revelation, which is way off into the future.
  3. History: all recorded history has proven God’s word correct. Thousands upon thousands of wars have been documented in every continent on earth, for thousands of years, in every imaginable situation, amongst many many different races and groups of people. And this does not include countless conflicts that are not classified as full scale wars.

The devil and human nature have not changed since the fall of man recorded in Genesis 3 thousands of years ago, so there will always be wars until God makes a new heaven and earth way off into the future.

II Peter 3:13
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

So with all that fascinating information on war, we need to proceed with the context of what Jesus said.

One of the ways that the bible interprets itself is that all scriptures on the same subject must be in harmony with each other.

For example, if there are 37 verses on subject x, and 4 of them seem to contradict the other 33 verses, we should not build an entire doctrine around the 4 oddball or confusing verses. That’s not handling the word of God honestly, logically, or consistently.

We must do more research on the 4 problem verses, [the minority] to find out how they fit in with the rest [the majority].

Let’s see what the bible says about peace.

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

This appears to be a direct contradiction to what Jesus was teaching about coming to bring war!

Matthew 5:9
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Mark 4:9
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Jesus even calmed a storm on the sea of Galilee in order for there to be peace!

Mark 9:50
Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

Jesus is teaching them to have peace amongst themselves, so how can he teach about bringing war??

Luke 10:5
And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.

Jesus is teaching his disciples to bring peace to the homes they went to.

At this point, we can see then that there are many other verses that clearly and unmistakeably teach that Jesus taught people to be peaceful, yet this seems to contradict the 2 verses in Matthew 10 & Luke 12 where Jesus said he came to cause war and division.

Ready for the answer?

Its figures of speech.

Definition of figures of speech
noun, plural figures of speech. Rhetoric
1. any expressive use of language, as a metaphor, simile, personification, or antithesis, in which words are used in other than their literal sense, or in other than their ordinary locutions, in order to suggest a picture or image or for other special effect.
Compare trope (def 1).

One of the principles of how the bible interprets itself is that the scriptures are to be taken literally whenever and wherever possible. However, if the words are not literally true to fact, then there is a figure of speech being used.

The purpose of figures of speech are to give emphasis on what God wants emphasized in his word. In other words, figures of speech tell us what is most important in the bible.

There are over 240 different kinds of figures of speech used in the bible, and some have as many as 40 different varieties under one single figure, so its a massive area of study that few christians seem to be aware.

Specifically, the answer to our problem is a figure of speech called metonymy.

Definition of Metonymy
noun, Rhetoric
1. a figure of speech that consists of the use of the name of one object or concept for that of another to which it is related, or of which it is a part, as “scepter” for “sovereignty,” or “the bottle” for “strong drink,” or “count heads (or noses)” for “count people.”.

Word Origin and History for metonymy
n.
1560s, from French métonymie (16c.) and directly from Late Latin metonymia, from Greek metonymia, literally “a change of name,” related to metonomazein “to call by a new name; to take a new name,” from meta- “change” (see meta-) + onyma, dialectal form of onoma “name” (see name (n.)). Figure in which the name of one thing is used in place of another that is suggested by or associated with it (e.g. the Kremlin for “the Russian government”). Related: Metonymic ; metonymical.

Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2010 Douglas Harper

E.W. Bullinger’s appendix to the companion bible  [Scroll down to metonymy].

Met-o’-ny-my; or, Change of Noun
When one name or noun is used instead of another, to which it stands in a certain relation.

[There are 4 different types of this figure of speech, and then there are several different subtypes under each one of those].

Of the Cause. When the cause is put for the effect (Genesis 23:8. Luke 16:29).
Of the Effect. When the effect is put for the cause producing it (Genesis 25:23. Acts 1:18).
Of the Subject. When the subject is put for something pertaining to it (Genesis 41:13. Deutronomy 28:5).
Of the Adjunct. When something pertaining to the subject is put for the subject itself (Genesis 28:22. Job 32:7).

The scriptures listed are not the only ones that are affected by this particular figure of speech. They are simply 2 examples.

On page 548 of E.W. Bullinger’s Figures of Speech used in the bible, in the category of Metonymy of the cause, it says of Matthew 10:34:

“I came not to send peace, but a sword” [i.e. but for war]. That is to say, the object of his coming was peace, but the effect of it was war.”

This is why so many wars seem to be related to religion, which is hypocrisy. As a matter of fact, the phrase “holy war” that we have all heard of in the news, is a contradiction of terms. War is ultimately caused by the most unholy people on earth – those born of the seed of the serpent, the sons of Belial that we have read about earlier. So going out on a killing spree called “holy war” is anything but holy.

It is always unbelief in God’s word by people who are hostile against God that cause wars. These sons of belial have many different names in the bible.  Here are only 2 verses about them.

Psalms 81:15
The haters of the Lord should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever.

Acts 13:10
And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

Here are some examples of unbelief causing division in the body of Christ and our societies at large.

Acts 6
8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.
10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.
11 Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.

Verse 11: definition of suborn:
verb (used with object)
1. to bribe or induce (someone) unlawfully or secretly to perform some misdeed or to commit a crime.
2. Law.
to induce (a person, especially a witness) to give false testimony.
to obtain (false testimony) from a witness.

Here are the effects of bribery, evil acts and devil spirit infestation.
12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,
13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:
14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.
15 And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

Acts 14
1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.
2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.

Acts 17
1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:
2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.
4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.
8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.
9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

So while world peace [I once saw a bumper sticker that said “whirled peas” :)] is an impossibility, we, as individuals, can still have God’s peace within ourselves.

Romans 1:7
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Romans 8:6
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Romans 10:15
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

I Corinthians 14:33
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Philippians 4
6 Be careful [anxious] for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth [surpasses] all understanding, shall keep [guard] your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

So now the horrifically sounding verses in Matthew 10 & Luke 12 are not horrific at all!

They are very accurate and are in harmony with all other verses on the same subject.  Furthermore, these verses are very realistic, for all you “realists” out there.

Despite the impossibility of avoiding of wars, people can still have God’s perfect peace in their hearts as they rightly divide the bible and apply it in their lives.
